L-Citrulline vs L-Arginine: What’s the Difference?
Both relate to nitric oxide production, but their absorption and metabolism differ.
The short version
Citrulline and arginine are connected: the body can convert citrulline to arginine. Oral citrulline can be an efficient way to raise circulating arginine because of differences in absorption and first-pass metabolism.
Why supplement labels differ
Some formulas use arginine directly, others use citrulline, and some combine ingredients. A product category label such as “nitric oxide booster” does not tell you the dose, evidence quality or expected outcome.
What to compare
Compare disclosed quantity, form, total serving size, study population and outcome—not just ingredient presence. If a proprietary blend hides individual quantities, a precise dose comparison is impossible.
